"A Great Beginning is sometimes at the point of what you thought would be the end of everything."
I am one of those rare native Floridians. I was born, raised and spent most of my life in the Orlando/
Winter Park area. Later in life, I also owned a home on Palm Island, where I became enamored with the Gulf coast of Florida.
After studying fashion and interior design at Florida State University, I found myself living in NYC and flying for Eastern Airlines. I later became supervisor of flight attendants at JFK. My career at Eastern gave me entrée to dealing with people from the highest echelon to the people who serviced the planes - a great experience in all regards. Living in NYC was an education in itself and both experiences contributed to my passion for travel, fine dining, and live performances.
Returning to Winter Park, I created a unique home décor shop which I subsequently developed into a three-store mini chain. It was a love affair I enjoyed over a 20 year period of my life. Being featured in Gifts and Decorative Accessories Magazine - the Bible of that industry - was an honor and the highlight of my career.
Relocating to the majestic mountains of Highlands, NC, where I had summered for many years, I developed a parcel of eco-sensitive land into a small upscale residential community. I then built and furnished a number of "spec homes," with one of my homes being featured on TV and also in a magazine.
While in NC, I had the unique opportunity of hosting the 2008 Southern Living Magazine Idea House, which was the first "green constructed" Idea House for Southern Living. I then was invited to participate in a "build" for the ABC TV series, Extreme Makeover; Home Edition - another once in a lifetime opportunity.
While living in Highlands, I fulfilled my need to serve others through my involvement in the community and my church, and am best known there as the "camel lady." Inspired by the finale of the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Extravaganza, I organized a "nativity processional" which featured a live donkey with "Mary" astride, led by "Joseph" and flanked by three live camels with the "Three Wise Men" at their lead. It created quite a sensation that first Christmas Parade when all appeared on Main Street of that tiny mountain town!
Having moved somewhat recently to Sarasota without knowing anyone, it has been difficult as a single person to create a new life. I found that being single, unless you are well connected, can be a very limiting life.
I am such a lover of life and have so many interests that I am passionate about. However, if you don't have friends or a significant other to share them with, they do not seem very meaningful when done alone.
Ssssssh, don't tell my friends, but yes, I did attempt to meet people online. I guess that if Martha Stewart can own up to giving it a whirl, so can I! I did meet some nice people along the way, however, had far more negative experiences than positive. I found that for me, the whole process led to a lot of wasted time and disappointment. I always felt there must be a better way to meet other singles.
People are sometimes placed in your life for a purpose. I happened to meet Carol Erickson in a restaurant on St. Armands. She shared her concept of the singles social club she and her husband Harold founded 27 years previously in Chicago and how her members who wintered here in Sarasota always lamented the fact that there was nothing like "The Single Gourmet" in this area. She offered to be my mentor, if interested, in bringing this highly successful concept to this area. It seemed the perfect venue for me to be able to offer other singles like myself the opportunity to expand our horizons and experience life in a much broader sense. Thus, the SARASOTA SINGLES SOCIETY was born.
So many singles keep waiting to really live life until they meet that special someone. However, life is a gift to be enjoyed each and every day. Waiting to live it under optimum circumstances leads to missing out on a lot of golden nuggets that could be savored along the way.
In the spirit of fun, friendship, and hospitality, we invite you to join us as we celebrate life, by becoming a member of the SARASOTA SINGLES SOCIETY.
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." ~Mark Twain
